Nicole Richie’s Harper’s Bazaar interview: On charity, the papz, postpartum activities, tattoos, and friends

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

harpers-nicole-richie

Here we are on our last installment of Nicole Richie’s interview in Harper’s Bazaar’s June 2008 issue. Enjoy the read everyone!

On the decision to start the Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation: I got like 10 cribs and 20 strollers. For one little girl! So we wanted to take the gifts we got and give them to the people who actually needed them. [We met with charity advising firm] Inspired Philanthropy, and they really opened our eyes. – Awww… such a generous heart their for someone once branded as a Hollywood bad girl.

On the paparazzi: It is scary. I don’t want that around her, I just don’t … it’s definitely the thing that makes me most nervous. [But] I’m the luckiest girl alive right now. I have nothing to complain about. – Well papz will always be papz; if the Jolie-Pitts were able to handle it well, so can the Richie-Maddens.

On complaints that she attended events at a few weeks postpartum: You know what? (furrows brow) I was gone for maybe three hours. I never go out. I go four or five days without leaving my house. But the press just went wild with it. [We have] a date night once a week. [Sometimes we see] a movie if the running time’s not too long. – And why has this been a big deal?

On tattoos: To be honest, it would completely break my heart if she got a tattoo! – Getting a doze of her own medicine, eh. Ah, motherhood!

On her close celebrity friends, such as Paris Hilton, Mischa Barton, and Mary-Kate Olsen: I feel like my group of five to ten friends, they really love [Harlow], like she’s theirs … my friends never go outside for smoke breaks anymore, they don’t curse, they are definitely more demure. It’s actually been really interesting. – Don’t you think this is one reason why Paris once was addicted to the thought of having her own child someday, too?

Sigh, it’s just a wonder what kind of change motherhood brings to a woman…

Nicole Richie’s Harper’s Bazaar interview: On pregnancy style, body, and life perspectives

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

nicole-richie-harpers-bazaar-june-2008

We are still here going on a backtrack of Nicole Richie’s interview with Harper’s Bazaar a year ago.

So far, we’ve read Nicole’s views on motherhood, on her relationship with Joel Madden, marriage, and children. This time, let’s go read on what Nicole’s thoughts on her pregnancy style, her post-pregnancy body, and how she’s changed her perspectives.

On her pregnancy style: It’s not like I blew up overnight. It gradually happened, and then I wasn’t pregnant anymore. When my jeans stopped fitting, I wore the Balenciaga riding pants. I like to be comfortable. Luckily for me, I’m completely comfortable in six-inch heels! – Yeah, lucky you Nicole. When I was pregnant, it was so hard for me to look for an outfit that I’d feel so comfortable in.

On her post-baby body: Half my wardrobe is already stretched. Not all my clothes fit the same. I don’t even think it’s a weight thing; I think your body just changes after you have a baby. I don’t care either way, but (gestures to newfound chest) I’m not used to having a tank top or bra underneath my clothes. You always hear that people with blond hair or larger breasts get more attention, but I never really thought that was real! I like wearing shirts that are a bit see-through because before it didn’t really matter. But now it’s like, ‘Uh-oh, I could get arrested.’ – Haha! I actually felt the same when I just gave birth; too proud of my new-found chest. LOL!

On changing perspectives and ideals: You know, I went through a stage of thinking that once you had a baby, you moved to Brentwood, had a white picket fence, and it changed your entire life. But I love where I am right now. Every single thing is for Harlow. Joel took me out last week, and he was like, ‘Why don’t we go out and have a shopping day?’ But I ended up only going to kid stores. (laughs) I didn’t get to buy shoes or anything. – Aww… I am sure things would be pretty much the same for the second baby in the family.

Nicole Richie’s Harper’s Bazaar interview: On Motherhood, Joel, Marriage, and Children

Harper's Bazaar June 2008

Since we’re already at it, why not go full blown with our backtrack edition here in Nicole Richie Watch.

You’ve seen some touching photos of the Richie-Maddens in Harper’s Bazaar’s June 2008 issue. Now, let’s read on the interview that Nicole had in the issue. On this first part of our post we’ll see how Nicole described motherhood for the first time as well as trivial questions like Joel Madden, marriage, and more kids. Enjoy!

On describing motherhood so far: Hmm, I would say how fun it is. Everybody talks about how difficult it is in the first three months, but I absolutely love it. Everything I do is for her. My whole life revolves around her and I absolutely love it. I was so excited from the minute I found out I was pregnant … and it’s been nothing but an amazing ride since. – Obviously she enjoyed it so much, they’re adding more! Yipee! And I actually totally agree with her here.

On her and Joel’s opposite personalities: Yeah, for being so opposite, we could possibly hate each other. (smiles) [Joel is] very conservative. [He has] a different way of thinking. But at the same time, he’s never tried to change me. And if anything, we were friends first. – That’s why I really think they, two are each other’s match.

We just have fun together. When we’re apart, we just get on iChat and don’t even say anything to each other. (laughs) He likes to get girly sometimes. But he’d kill me if he knew I said that!

On Joel as a father: Joel actually changes more diapers than I do! It’s his time with her. He sings to her … he laughs with her, plays with her. It’s amazing.

On the topic of marriage and more kids: One day, yeah — not tomorrow, not today. We are committed to our family. I’m 26. I’ve definitely had a very eventful year. So right now, it’s about me enjoying my time with my daughter.

I want five children: twin boys and three girls. I’ve wanted that since I was a little girl.

Nicole Richie on marriage and second baby’s sex

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

With baby number two coming it is inevitable for Nicole Richie and Joel Madden to be asked about marriage. Unfortunately, fans like me may have to put that wedding hopes aside as the former reality star and her rocker boyfriend seem to have other things in their minds yet.

Talking to Larry King Live with her father, Lionel last Thursday the mom to Harlow and very pregnant for the second time shared about her thoughts on marriage and getting married on day.

She said, “…right now, we’re really, really focused on our family, we’re focused on our foundation and as far as feeling that need of commitment, we both really have that in each other.”

As to the sex of her next baby, Nicole shares, “We want the surprise. What is there really to plan? I’ll get the clothes after.” This, her father inserted saying, “Joel and I are having powwows. I want a grandson.”

“You should here them prepping each other, wishing for a boy,” Nicole buts in.

Well I, too wish Nicole and Joel have a boy. It’s always cute to have a pair.

On the other hand, I am so in to Nicole here about the marriage thing. She and Joel are obviously in-love with each other so wedding bells would just be icing on the cake. We’ve seen a lot of pairs in Hollywood today with grand wedding yet just end up filing divorce. I guess we just have to wait and see what these two would have in the future.

Right now, let’s just be excited waiting for Nicole’s next baby.

Nicole and Lionel Richie on Larry King Live: Nicole talks on wild days, defends Lionel as a father

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

After their appearance got rescheduled for more important news – like the death of Mike Tyson’s 4-year-old daughter – finally Nicole Richie with her father, Lionel got aired yesterday for their joint interview at Larry King Live.

Keeping in the show’s serious atmosphere, Nicole answered with all honesty her struggles during her wild-child days and was even brave enough to open up about those troubling times.

Asked how she come through all that Nicole shared, “With the support of my family, really. I’ve always stayed close with my mother and my father. I have really great friends and I just have a really great circle around me who support me no matter what and don’t judge me no matter how low I’ve ever gotten. And I really think that’s the key to everything.”

But as to knowing why it started Nicole admitted not knowing the root of her behavior but says, “I really don’t think about it anymore. I mean everyone has made mistakes like I said it’s all about moving forward and learning from your mistakes; and that’s really where I am at in my own head.”

Her father, Lionel added up how his daughter helped herself and decided to get into rehab. But as the singer relates the rehab days of Nicole, he also hinted how he wasn’t able to be there 100% to watch over his daughter to which Nicole countered, “I really hate when says that he wasn’t a good dad because my memory of my childhood was nothing but good memories.”

While defending Lionel as a father to her, Nicole also admitted that she’s also been a terrible daughter.

Oh, ain’t that so sweet of Nicole?

You can see from her actions and her words that she has indeed matured and learned from her actions. Kudos to Nicole!

Nicole and Lionel Richie joint interview moved

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

larry-king

Well it seems like fans would have to wait a bit longer to catch Nicole Richie and her dad, Lionel in a joint interview after their scheduled appearance on Larry King Live has been moved due to the news about the death of Mike Tyson’s daughter.

Scheduled to appear on the show last Tuesday (May 26), Larry King announced that night about the move of sked. He said: “Lionel Richie and Nicole Richie were scheduled to be here tonight. Due to breaking news developments in many areas, they graciously agreed to be here Thursday night and for the whole hour.”

Proving that the re-schedule was a no big deal, Nicole was even bubbly about it writing on her Twitter, “They said I’m too embarrasing to actually be on the show, so they held me back in the green room.”

Earlier that day, the mom to Harlow sounded excited about the interview and even updated her official website blog. She said: “Tonight my dad will be appearing on Larry King Live. He has a new album out and I will be joining him on the show to talk about everything from his music, to the Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation, to everything else going on in our lives. Tomorrow I will be putting up pictures from our night at the show.

The show will air on CNN at 6:00pm PST this coming Thursday, the 28th, and then again at 9:00pm PST. Hope you all can watch! xx”

Oh well I guess things like this really do happen, right?! Good thing both Lionel and Nicole were just cool about it.

Nicole Richie and her dad to sit on Larry King Live

Babies always do bring families closer together. In Nicole Richie’s case, it’s the coming of her second baby that’s bringing her and her father, Lionel in a joint interview after six years.

Appearing on “Larry King Live” today, the popular father and daughter will be on the show to talk about their life together, especially now that the former reality TV star and her boyfriend, Joel Madden are expecting their second baby.

In his recent interview, Lionel was obviously proud to what his daughter has become after giving birth to Harlow Winter Kate last year. Talking about the straight path Nicole is having now, he said: “Where most people would get into a dangerous situation — drugs, alcohol, the wrong type of people, the wrong area of town — she can check it out and exit graciously. How many people exit through drug abuse? You wouldn’t know that this is the same person that five years ago had a reality show. There’s still that woman there who’s a spoofer of life, but she’s changed in her chemistry.”

Knowing what Nicole Richie’s has been in the past – weight issues, drugs, and controversies here and there – I sure can see why Lionel is this proud of his daughter. If we are glad to seining Nicole now straightening out her life, what more to a father who saw her at her lowest, right?!

This interview of the two is something we all would look forward to. Hopefully I can get a video of their interview that I can post here. So stay tuned.

Going full blast on this, here’s the last part of Nicole’s ViVi magazine interview experience.

Q: What’s your closet like? [ViVi model/Marie]
Nicole: There are clothes all over the place, and it’s really not that glamourous [laughs]. I’m living in a rented place right now, so there aren’t any big closets! My shoe boxes are all over the place and I’ve not organised it at all!

Q: What’s your focal point in make-up? [ViVi model/Chikako Watanabe]
Nicole: EYE!

Q: What’s your favourite eye make-up brand? [ViVi model/Laura]
Nicole: For eyeliner, M.A.C’s liquid type, and Maybelline for mascara! The truth is, I’m not very good at make-up and have no idea what I should do with it! All I’m decent at is eyeliner. Whenever I use a professional make-up artist, I always have them stick false lashes on me, but I could never do it myself [laughs]! So I love mascara! Maybelline is great because it’s inexpensive and easy to use!

Q: Tell us three things you love about Joel! [ViVi model/Mari Syara]
Nicole: 1: He’s a great dad!
2: He’s a very talented musician!
3: His great personality!

Q: What do you two call each other? [Aoyama University 3rd year student]
Nicole: We don’t have any nicknames in particular. We just call each other ‘Joel’ and ‘Nicole’.

Q: What kind of presence/existence is your daughter, Harlow, to you? [3rd year university student]
Nicole: Everything! Harlow is my everything!

vivimag-3

Q: Does Harlow take after [read: look like] you? Or does she look more like Joel? [ViVi model/Mako Mizuhara]
Nicole: When she was born she looked exactly like Joel! The green eyes and blonde hair are definitely from me, but she looks a lot like Joel.

Q: It was Harlow’s 1st birthday recently, but did you have a party for her? [ViVi writer/Hiroko Miyazaki]
Nicole: We didn’t really have a party, but we invited some friends and family over. But I’m asking my friends, ‘please don’t get presents for Harlow’. She’s loved by lots of people, and that’s more than enough happiness for her! This is a rule that Joel and I decided on.

Q: What’s your room like? [Kari Hayashi/freelance worker]
Nicole: Joel’s gothic and my bright and colourful taste are mixed together.

Q: How many pairs of sunglasses do you own? [ViVi stylist]
Nicole: More than 200 pairs!!! Sunglasses are something I’m always buying! I don’t have a specific brand I prefer, but I like lighter colours and big designs. My favourite pair is a big vintage pair of sunglasses I have!

Q: What is your favourite item that you’ve bought recently? [ViVi model/Jun Hasegawa]
Nicole: Balenciaga shoes, an Alexander McQueen scarf, and my Rick Owens leather jacket and knit [sweater].

Q: Do you have any rules for shopping? [Ena Matsumoto/Rienda owner]
Nicole: I’m always buying new summer dresses.

Q: How many Balenciaga bags do you own? [Akiko Inoue/N Girls' University 3rd year student]
Nicole: 50! The bag I have today is also Balenciaga. I use my black one the most! I love it because it’s easy to coordinate with pretty much any style.

Q: How can Japanese girls get style like yours? [ViVi writer/Mari Nishimura]
Nicole: With 1960s accessories from my brand, House of Harlow <3

Q: In Japan there’s a rumour that Michael Jackson is the one who named you…is that true?? [Seira Ueda/N Girls' University student]
Nicole: NO~! Is there really a rumour like that?! It wasn’t Michael Jackson! It was definitely my parents who named me! That’s the first time I ever heard that rumour!

Q: How do you dress when you’re at home?
Nicole: I like to dress relaxed at home, in sweats or a T-shirt and leggings!

Q: What are the things you absolutely cannot live without? [Mariko Kobayasi/S Girls' University 3rd year student]
Nicole: Sunglasses, my car, and my iPod.

Q: Where in L.A. are we most likely to find you/run into you?
Nicole: The Coffee Bean! [a coffee shop found only in L.A.]
enjoy!

Q: What did you get from Joel for Christmas? [ViVi Stylist/Yukari Ota]
Nicole: It’s a secret <3

Nicole Richie ViVi Mag

Nicole sure is an international hit even in fashion!

And to prove this, our petite fashionista lands in the cover of Japan’s ViVi magazine for its April 2009 issue and answers questions from [Japanese] celebrities, ViVi models, ViVi staff, and well-known reader models.

Here’s the (translated) text of Nicole’s interview with the mag:

Q: Your skin is so lovely! What’s your secret to keeping beautiful skin? [ViVi model/Ellie Rose]
Nicole: I’m embarrassed to say after being complimented like that…I just wash my face with Dove soap!

Q: Aren’t you going to marry Joel? [Eri Tsukimoto/age 24/freelance worker]
Nicole: I don’t know what the future holds! I’m trying not to plan my future out. Hmmmm…maybe, maybe not?

Q: What’s a day in your life like? [Erika Fujimoto/2nd year University student]
Nicole: I wake up every day at 6:45am, because Harlow always wakes up at 7!

Q: How would you describe your personality in one word? [ViVi writer/Mariko Kobayashi]
Nicole: Nice and Fun!

Q: Tell us how you coordinate to make even a size 0 look like a style goddess! [Miriya Katou/artist]
Nicole: I always wear my skirts mini or really long! I’m really happy that Japanese girls think I’m a style goddess! I have clothes that were made for taller sizes, but I’m aware that I’m not [made] like that. One thing I’ll never try is high-waisted jeans! They’re definitely made for taller people.

Q: What kind of style do you want to try this Spring? [ViVi model/Lena Fujii]
Nicole: I’m into this season’s silver styling! It’s easy and goes well with monotones.

To be continued…

Nicole Richie talks about House of Harlow 1960 with PopSugar

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

at-kitson1

Still on her works promoting her line of accessories, House of Harlow 1960, pregnant mom, Nicole Richie talks to PopSugar about her designs and plans for the future.

Here’s what they’ve talked about:

Question: How did your jewelry line all come together?
Nicole: I had the idea to do the line about two years ago and it took that long for everything to really come together. I met Pascal [Mouawad] and he’s such a genius. I really respected him so I knew 100% that that’s who I wanted to partner up with and I’m really happy that I did.

Q: You had a baby in that time, how do you find the time to do all this?
N: I think there’s 24 hours in a day, and if you schedule it right it just all works out.

Q: Can you talk a bit about your inspiration behind House of Harlow?
N: I’m really inspired by the 60s and 70s. I have a pretty big collection of vintage jewelry so this particular collection was based off of that.

Q: You talked a bit about that collection of jewels and pieces from your family in InStyle last Fall. Are there any particular pieces you’re excited to pass down to your children?
N: Definitely! I would be honored to. My mom has passed down so many great pieces to me so that would be really great.

Q: Do you have any favorite pieces in the line?
N: The headpieces are definitely my favorite.

Q: Are there any plans to expand House of Harlow?
N: Yes! I just partnered up with a company and we’re going to be expanding House of Harlow. We’re going to be doing sunglasses, belts, bags, clothing… so I’m very, very excited.

Q: When is that coming?
N: Well probably the first thing will be out next year. We’re going full steam with it.

Q: Any plans to design for your charity at all?
N: Definitely! When the right opportunity comes along yes. I love helping people.

House of Harlow 1960 is exclusively sold at Kitson.
